ALCALA DE HENARES, birthplace of famed novelist Miguel de Cervantes, has been widely recognized as one of Spain's key cultural destinations. Located just 30 kilometers from Madrid, Alcalá was the world's very first planned university town, the home of the Universidad Complutense (university) since its founding by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499. The heritage center of Alcalá reflects the contributions of Jews, Moslems, and Christians to community life in the middle ages. Alcalá de Henares was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998.
