in the seventeenth century. We might even espy the establishment
where an innkeeper conferred knighthood upon Don Quixote. Then we’ll
pass onward through the region of Valdepeñas, where fine
Tempranillo grapes are grown, and cross the Canyon of Despeñaperros,
and pass through the town of Bailén on our way to Cordoba.
Here we’ll visit the famous Mosque, one of the most notable
in the days of Moorish rule. Then we’ll continue onward to

the Cathedral that once echoed with daily calls to prayer, and the
Palace of the Alcazar, with its delicately carved stonework and
pleasure gardens that still delight. Your afternoon is free to wander

conquerors, and writers as noted as Washington Irving, with its
magnificent

Avila
of
the knights, Avila of the saints! The city is completely encircled
by 11th-century walls, and more than a city, it resembles a great
castle.
Avila has a number of Romanesque churches, Gothic palaces and a
fortified Cathedral from 12th century. The city was the birthplace
of St. Teresa de Jesús, one of the greatest mystics of the
Catholic Church. We'll stop at Cerro de Los Cuatro Postes to admire
one of the best views of the city. Our visit will include the Cathedral*
and St. Teresa's Convent, continuing to Segovia.
SEGOVIA
was an important military outpost in Roman times, evidenced by its
magnificent Aqueduct. It served as a summer residence for some of
Castille's kings, and maintains one of the most remarkable complexes
of medieval structures in all of Spain.
Lunch at your option will be characteristic Segovian fare, such
as La Granja white beans, roast veal or pork.
The city tour after lunch includes the last Gothic Cathedral* built
in Spain. Its grace and style have earned it the nickname "Queen
of Cathedrals." We'll also see the Alcázar, the most
spectacular Moorish-era castle of the country.
The tour will conclude at the terminal, Oriente Square, Madrid.
*
During special events at the Cathedral, another museum will be visited.
