Verona
| Verona has undoubtedly retained
its medieval atmosphere, laden with small alleys in its historic centre,
noble dwellings and ancient villas. The city is small enough and not too
crowded to explore easily. The Piazza delle Erbe is the core of the city
and is a lively market square. Off the piazza lies “via cappello”
named after the Cappello family who were foes with the Montecchi family;
Shakespeare turned them into the Capulets and the Montagues for his famous
play. The fourteenth century “Casa Giulietta” or Juliet’s
house stands at 23 via cappello. Even though the families of Romeo and
Juliet were based on fact, the fated lovers were fictional, however this
does not stop tourists being attracted to the house, and also seems Verona
could be the only setting for such a tragic love story. Among the city’s
monuments are the city’s cathedral, the church of San Lorenz, the
Roman gate of Porta Leoni and the richest of Verona’s churches,
San Giorgio in Braida, which is home to the Martyrdom of St George by
Paolo Veronese. |
