Milan

Milan is a successful combination of the country’s main industry as well as great artistic works of art. Home to the world’s largest gothic cathedral, the duomo, Milan combines not only fantastic historic architecture but is also the country’s economic capital which is more similar to fast paced London and New York life than the usual relaxed Italian atmosphere. However that is not to say tourists are not attracted to the city’s numerous churches, monuments and museums. While in Milan, visit the church of the patron saint, St Ambrose, known as the “Sant’Ambrogio basilica”. The Portinari Chapel by the Florentine architect Michelozzi, close to the important church of Sant’Estorgio attracts visitors, the Sforzesco castle built in 1368, the “museo del duomo” which hosts the civic museum and holds a display of twentieth century art. The most celebrated art gallery in Milan would be the “Pinacoteca di Brera”. The gallery was initially opened by Napoleon displaying works of art looted from church and aristocratic homes in French occupied Italy. On display are find examples of renaissance art such as Supper in the House of Simon by Paolo Veronese, The Dead Christ by Mantegna, Raphael’s Marriage of the Virgin and Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus.
