We’ve
planned this visit to Japan to include the essentials: Mount Fuji, traditional
Kyoto, and throbbing, modern Tokyo. But consider these just the starting
points. We’ll customize your experience of Japan to include the kinds
of accommodation that suit you, whether a fine hotel with all the familiar
conveniences, or a traditional ryokan (inn) with the charm and serenity
that are the hallmarks of Japanese culture. Spend more time shopping
in Tokyo or take extra days in Kyoto, visit a Kabuki theater or a hot-springs
mountain resort, or shop in an outdoor market alongside the locals.
We can arrange it all through our network of local contacts to create
an experience of Japan that’s exactly to your measure.
Here’s our suggested itinerary, which we’ll alter to your requirements.
You’ll
land at the New Tokyo International Airport (Narita). After clearing
immigration, you'll retrieve your baggage and make your way to the
shuttle van counter in the arrivals lobby on the first floor. At
your option, we can arrange for you to be met and escorted to your transport
into town. Welcome to Tokyo! Your ride to your hotel will provide a
first view of the Japanese capital, so modern and familiar, and yet
so different. Streets are busy but orderly and neat, lights and signs
glitter everywhere, alternating with serene green oases. We suggest
booking the Grand Palace Hotel for two nights, but we have a wide choice
of alternatives. After your long flight, you’ll probably want to unwind
on your own and get to know Tokyo at a relaxed pace. There’s a lot to
take in, from spotless streets to bicycles left unlocked to vending
machines dispensing unexpected products ranging from superb hot coffee
in cans to whiskey. Enjoy the wonders of Tokyo, both great and small.

Day
15 : TOKYO - Sat - Breakfast
Our plan is to show you the sights of Tokyo this morning. Ascend the
Tokyo Tower to the observatory level for a commanding view of the city,
and visit the Imperial Palace Plaza. For a taste of the traditional
in the midst of the modern bustle, we’ll take you to the Asakusa Kannon
Temple, a harmonious melding of design and spirituality. If you choose,
we can stop to sample the wares available at the Tasaki Pearl Gallery,
a multi-level emporium of pearls and much more, or you might choose
to explore the wonders of electronics or even the famed department stores.
Other options include a cruise on Tokyo Bay, and a stroll through the
exciting neon-lit streets of Ginza. Feel free to wander on your own
in one of the safest cities anywhere. We’ll arrange the combination
of escorted and independent activities that best suits you.
Day
16 : TOKYO - MOUNT FUJI - HAKONE - KYOTO (BL) - Sun - Breakfast
/ Lunch
It’s out into the countryside today, to fabled Mount Fuji and its perfect
snow-capped cone. Enjoy the neat and lovingly tended farms along the
way as you speed through the countryside on a motor coach, approaching
and continuing right onto the slopes of Japan’s highest mountain. Our
plan is to ascend to the halfway point at 2300 meters (7600 feet) for
spectacular views of rolling fields, orchards, lakes, and streams and,
of course, up to the mountain itself. Lunch is planned for the Highland
Resort, followed by a serene cruise on Lake Ashi, and a breathtaking
ride on the Mt. Komagatake aerial tramway. You may choose to spend the
night at the resort, or continue to the rail station to board the Bullet
Train that will speed you onward to Kyoto. In the latter case, our suggested
lodging is the New Miyako hotel for the next two nights, though we can
also offer a comfortable traditional inn as well.
Day 17 : KYOTO - NARA - KYOTO (BL) - Mon - Breakfast
/ Lunch
Visit the major sites of Japan’s ancient capital this morning. Among
the extraordinary riches of Kyoto are the Golden Pavilion, Nijo Castle
with its exquisite interiors, Ryoanji Temple, the Higashi Honganji Temple,
and the ancient Imperial Palace (not open on weekends or holidays; we
can plan your visit accordingly). After lunch at Kyoto's Handicraft
Center, you can take in more of Kyoto’s traditional sites, or travel
to Nara, first capital of a united Japan. Significant places to visit
include the Todaiji Temple with its huge Buddha; the 3000 lanterns of
the Kasuga Shrine, and the Deer Park, where the animals are free to
roam.
Day 18 : Kyoto - Tokyo - Tuesday ( B) - Breakfast
Experience the Bullet Train back to Tokyo, where we’ll arrange for you
to be met and escorted to the Grand Palace Hotel or other lodgings of
your choice.
If you stay in Osaka, you may choose to visit Sanjusangendo Hall with
its 1,001 impressive images of Buddha, the vermilion-hued Heian Shrine,
and Kiyomizu Temple with its wooden verandah. For further explorations,
you can wander the charming traditional sections of Kyoto. Perhaps you'll
head for Fushimi, in the south of the city, where you'll find charming
canals, sake breweries, and, among others, the Fushimi Inari Grand Shrine,
with its thousands of bright gates, an expected surprise. We can arrange
tours to the Katsura Imperial Villa or the Shugakuin Imperial Villa,
according to your time and interests.
Day 19 : Departure – Tokyo - New York - Wednesday
( B) - Breakfast
We’ll arrange for your travel to Narita International Airport to begin
your homeward journey back to JFK .
