pharaohs, and precious stones and metals. Then it’s onward to
the bustling Khan El Khalili Bazaar,
the labyrinthine district with its array of spice shops and clothing
merchants and purveyors of baskets and brassware and a thousand other
specialties. And of course we’ll see the Pyramids, and the mysterious
Sphinx at Giza, on the edge of Cairo in the desert. In the evening,
we'll escort you to the railroad station, and settle you into your modest
and clean sleeping compartment on the train bound southward along the
banks of the Nile. Enjoy dinner on board, and fall asleep as you watch
the lights of villages reflect in the river.

DAY
4 — ASWAN, KOM OMBO – Friday (BLD)
Good morning, and welcome to Upper Egypt! Upon arrival in Aswan, we’ll
detrain, and proceed right to our Nile steamer, the M/S Lady Diana or
similar and an orientation to our adventures over the next few days
along the great river. Then we’ll set out to visit the dams at
Aswan, including the modern Wonder of the High Dam. At the ancient granite
quarry, we’ll see the Unfinished Obelisk. We’ll visit the
Temples of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis and rescued from the
rising waters of Lake Nasser when the dams were built. And we’ll
even sail in traditional style among the rocky isles of the Nile on
a traditional felucca. By evening, we’ll be aboard our steamer,
cast off, and head downriver toward Kom Ombo.
DAY
5 - KOM OMBO, EDFU, LUXOR – Saturday (BLD)
Soon after daybreak, we'll disembark at Kom Ombo to explore the twin
temples of Haroeris, the sun god, and Sobek, the crocodile god, then
continue our voyage to Edfu. Horse-drawn carriages or vans meet us at
riverside to take us to the Temple of Horus, best-preserved in all of
Egypt. Later, we'll cruise to Esna, and onward to Luxor.
DAY
6 — LUXOR – Sunday (BLD)
We'll cross the Nile to view an array of ancient splendors: the tomb
chambers of the Valley of the Kings; the imposing tomb-temple of Queen
Hatshepsut in the Valley of the Queens; and, on the way back to the
ferry landing, the Colossi of Memnon. Then we’ll take a short
excursion along the river’s banks to the imposing Great Temple
of Amon at Karnak, the largest religious complex in the world. We’ll
conclude our to the impressive colonnades of the Temple of Luxor, but
our day is far from over. Tonight is our formal Captain’s Dinner.

and take tea under a carpet of a million stars. Of course, you’ll
take advantage of secluded moments in special company.
DAY
12 — HURGHADA, CAIRO – Saturday

to the Citadel of Saladin to a dinner cruise on the Nile. Of course,
we’ll be pleased to assist with any arrangements.
DAY
13—CAIRO - Sunday (B)

With an early start, you could even go for the day to the ancient and
romantic port city of Alexandria, to view the extraordinary new library
and treasures from Napoleon’s ill-fated fleet. But there’s
lots to see in and around Cairo as well, from Dahshour, the newly-opened
pyramid field to the south . . . to music performances. . . the Ben

Encounter
your African heritage, not only in in Ghana, Senegal, but yes, also in
Egypt.
Sometimes passed by in the quest for roots, Egypt flows from the heart
of Africa, nourished not only by the waters of the Nile, but also by the
peoples and cultures of its continent. Egypt’s traditional borders
stretch far to the south, into the heart of the continent. The Nubians,
so evidently African, built the great temples of Luxor and Abu Simbel.
Tall and mighty, they embodied the ideals of the kingdom in the personal
guard of the Pharohs and the presidential guard of today. Cast a glance
at the peoples of Egypt, and you’ll see Africa, not only in Nubia,
but in every walk of life, up to the presidency of Anwar Sadat.
Don’t overlook the obvious! You’ll be welcomed in Egypt, and
you’ll feel at home, as part of the African family
