Porlamar "By-the-Sea," if you read it literally, is Margarita's bustling capital, where modern hotels with every amenity line the shores. Eateries range from open-air to fine cuisine, and shopping ranges from exquisite jewelry to bazaars of workaday merchandise and fruits and vegetables, just as in many a South American town. Don't like the price they ask? Just name your own, and be prepared to bargain, bargain, bargain until both parties are pleased.

Pastimes   Practically any seaside activity is available in or near Porlamar, from swimming and snorkeling to snuba, banana boating, and next year's invention. Prices are attractive enough that you might want to try an activity or two or three that you hadn't considered. Or head out to explore the back country on horseback, by mountain bike, or on a jeep tour. El Yaque beach near the airport is considered one of the finest windsurfing spots anywhere, while Parguito beach is perfect for surfing.

Natural Wonders  La Restinga National Park comprises the lowlands between the higher parts of Margarita. You can get here by boat, pay a fee, and enjoy the beach far from the crowds. And there are other beaches all around, at La Caracola, Pampatar, Guacuco and El Tirano.
