Serengeti
National Park
Tanzania's most famous national park, and the largest protected area that
borders Kenya's Masai Mara. Its far-reaching plains of endless grass,
tinged with the twisted shadows of acacia trees, have made it the quintessential
image of a wild and untarnished Africa. Its large stone kopjes are home
to rich ecosystems. Large pride of lions laze easily in the long grasses,
plentiful families of elephants feed on acacia bark and trump to each
other across the plains, and giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland, and the
whole range of African wildlife is in awe-inspiring numbers. The Grumeti
River in the Western Corridor is the location for the dramatic river crossing
during the great annual migration.

Highlights
of Serengeti
The great annual migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara attracts
visitors from around the world, who flock to the open plains to witness
the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet. More than a million
animal make the seasonal journey to fresh pasture to the north, then the
south, after the biannual rains. A visit to Mwanza, within 3 hours drive.
The city of Mwanza is the major Tanzanian port of Lake Victoria. For visitors,
the city makes a good base from which to explore the Rubondo Island National
Park that offers pleasant day-hikes and bird watching around the lakeshore.
A trip over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon give you a supreme perspective
on the action below, and allows you to fully appreciate the enormity of
the plains and the sheer number of animals that migrate across them. The
bush walks which present unique experiences and will make you feel the
real African wilderness and not just a drive-by it. The bush walks are
not allowed within the park, they may however be organized in private
concession areas just outside Serengeti.

The
Great Annual Migration
The Greatest Show on Earth
The
Serengeti hosts the largest and longest overland migration, one of the
ten natural travel wonders of the world. Every year, the short November
rains signal the beginning of one of the most amazing wildlife spectacles.
Not surprisingly, this impressive phenomenon is determined by the availability
of grazing, which in turn is dependent upon rainfall.
In
pursuit of food and water, over a million wildebeest and half a million
zebra and antelope migrate every year, north from the Serengeti to the
adjoining Masai Mara. Forming columns which stretch for miles, the wildebeest
are joined by other hoofed animals. With the addition of lion, leopard
and crocodile, the journey is punctuated with drama. The predators follow
and crocodiles wait hungrily in the rivers. Only those herbivores which
can do without surface water for long periods and live on poor forage
remain during the dry season.
Come
November, when the grazing is finished in the north and the rains resume
in the south, the army of animals surge back to the renewed pastures to
mate and calve. Only through migration can the herds use the widespread
resources of the ecosystem and build up such huge numbers.
The
Migration is rarely ever the same in terms of precise timing and direction
as local conditions influence grass growth, it follows however a relatively
predictable cycle.

The
Migration Circle
November:
Thousands of large mammals travel fast, to the Serengeti's southern plains
and the Ngorongoro Highlands.
December through March:
The southern section of the Serengeti is where all the action takes place.
This is when the game animals give birth and start preparing for the northern
trek. Over 8,000 calves are born per day; yet less than half will live
to see their first birthday.
April:
The adults and surviving young move towards the Serengeti's western corridor.
June:
Arriving at the corridor around June, the millions of grazers are forced
to cross the Grumeti River. There is usually a waiting period of one to
two weeks as the animals prepare for the life-threatening crossing.
July:
From here attention shifts north as the migration enters the private Grumeti
Reserve with a small portion splitting off and heading northeast, to the
Lobo area.
August:
The best time to see the migration is usually in this June to August period.
In August the migration reaches the far northern area.
September to December:
September is another jump season as animals cross the Sand River and head
into the Masai Mara. They will stay in there where water is always available,
until the November rains in the south Serengeti beckon once again and
the cycle begins anew in December.

We just wanted to let you know we made it back home after our weeklong
detour through Italy. Athens was fantastic. The tours were very good,
and short of heading out to the islands, I can't think of a single thing
we would have rather done while there.
Although we had an excellent time in Athens, Egypt was by far the highlight
of our entire trip, including Italy. We just can't say enough
about Ahmed, Isis, Ashraf, and all our drivers. We simply could not have
done the trip without their help. Ahmed was very professional, courteous,
and helpful, and always went out of his way to make sure we were where
we needed to be at the right time. Our Egyptologist guides, Isis and Ashraf,
were both very knowledgeable and made our visit so much better with their
endless supply of information. We wore out both days long before they
did. We will definitely try to come back to Egypt when we have more time
to spend.
Thank you so much for arranging the trip, allowing us to customize what
we needed to, and putting us in touch with such good people. And please
find attached pictures of us enjoying a camel ride. :-)
