Day
1 - Rome / Roma - Arrival
- Saturday
You'll
arrive today at Rome's Fiumicino Airport, where your Roman host will
be waiting to greet you in your preferred language, be it Spanish, Japanese,
French, or English. After introductions, you'll be escorted in a private
car to the four-star Hotel Diana (Via Principe Amedeo, 4 Tel. 06 4827541)
. Your host will make sure that you're settled in for the evening, after
which you'll have a chance to make your own acquaintance with the Eternal
City.
Day
2 - Rome / Roma - Tour ( Breakfast) - Sunday
Your
included buffet breakfast is served as of 7:30 a.m., allowing time to
be ready for your 8:30 a.m. tour departure. Highlights will include
the famed Trevi Fountain - be sure to toss a coin! - the monumental
St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Piazza Navona, and the Pantheon
from Roman times. You'll be back at your hotel at 1 p.m. for the traditional
afternoon rest, then resume your discoveries at 3 p.m., with an emphasis
on ancient sites: Capitol Hill, and the Forum, the heart of ancient
Rome where public markets, ceremonies, religious rituals and spectacles
all took place. You'll continue to the Colosseum, completed in 72 A.D.
by the Emperor Vespasian, the site of chariot races, gladiatorial matches,
and even amphibious contests. Its solid structure still dominates this
part of the city. Then it's on to the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside
the Walls. You'll be back at your hotel by 6 p.m., and enjoy a relaxing
evening of dining on fine Roman cuisine, perhaps followed by a stroll
around the Eternal City.
Day
3 - Train and Cruise - Monday: Board the Deluxe M. S. Sinfonia (Breakfast
. Dinner )
Your morning is yours to enjoy Rome at your leisure, after a buffet
breakfast at your hotel. Return to the Forum for further exploration,
or browse the boutiques for incomparable Italian footwear and clothing.
Or do both. There's ample time, before we meet up at 1:45 p.m. to make
our way together to the rail station (subject to change according to
the cruise schedule). We'll board our rapid train for our 2:45 p.m.
departure, find our reserved seats, and reach Naples by 4:30 p.m., where
Travel in Style's local representative awaits. Then it's a short distance
to Beverello, where the M.S. Sinfonia awaits. We'll board ship, settle
into our cabins, and have time to explore the decks of the 60.000-ton
vessel. We sail at 7 p.m.
Day 4 - Tuesday: Palermo - Sicily - On Board the M. S. Sinfonia (Breakfast
.Lunch. Dinner )
We cruise along the coast of Italy through the evening and into the
night, enjoying dinner as we watch the twinkling lights of Amalfi in
the distance, tempting us to a later visit. We retire to our cabins,
and by morning, we'll be coming into the harbor of Palermo, the capital
of Sicily. Stay on board to relax and enjoy the ship's amenities, if
you wish, or join one of the optional excursions to see the Norman Cathedral
and more surprising sights of the crossroads of Mediterranean peoples.
In the early evening, with everyone back on board, our ship sets sail
again.
Day 5 - Wednesday: -Tunisia - On Board the M. S. Sinfonia (Breakfast
.Lunch. Dinner )
This morning, we'll reach Africa! We dock at the port of Tunis, capital
of Tunisia. Take advantage of the opportunity to go ashore and see where
ancient traditions thrive not far from modern boulevards. Penetrate
the winding lanes of the souk where men in djellabas and veiled women
bargain for copper wares and straw baskets. Soon, you'll be doing the
same! Gather up your purchases, and in the early afternoon we'll set
sail westward. All your meals will be served graciously on board.
Day
6 - Thursday: Palma de Mallorca - On Board the M. S. Sinfonia (Breakfast
.Lunch. Dinner )
This is our longest crossing, and it will take us all afternoon, through
the night, and our next morning to reach Palma on the island of Mallorca.
We'll enjoy our meals and shipboard activities, and arrive in time for
a full afternoon and evening in this one-time island kingdom. There's
plenty to appreciate: winding streets, huddled houses, alleyways where
even ancient Hebrew rituals are remembered. And of course, there are
beaches, and fine restaurants with a distinct take on Spanish cuisine.
Or, you can skip the optional excursions, and take advantage of the
fine onboard dining and activities.
Day
7 - Friday: Barcelona - Spain - on Board the M. S. Sinfonia (Breakfast
.Lunch. Dinner )
The night's crossing is relatively short, and in the morning we'll be
in the port of Barcelona, with a full menu of optional excursions. Join
the locals on wide boulevards, the Passeig de Gracia and the fabled
Ramblas. Explore the sinuous Modernist architecture of Gaudi and the
Modernists - a visit to the Sagrada Familia church is indispensable.
But then, so also are the Picasso Museum, the ancient quarter called
the Barrio Gotico, and the splendid public spaces around the port. Come
evening, it's time to embark once again.
Day
8 - Saturday: Marseille - France - on Board the M. S. Sinfonia (Breakfast
.Lunch. Dinner )
By morning, we'll drop anchor at Marseille, spectacular capital of the
South of France. There are winding lanes to explore, spectacular churches
and the Cathedral, all definitely French, but with the Mediterranean
touch of palm trees. And of course, you'll sample the wonderful cuisine
of France, not only in fine restaurants and bistros, but at markets
and food stands where even the art of the sandwich achieves great heights.
In the evening, we'll embark and set sail eastward, passing the lights
of the French Riviera.
Day
9 - Sunday: Genoa - Italy - on Board the M. S. Sinfonia (Breakfast .Lunch.
Dinner )
Morning
will see us in Genoa, the port of discovery that Columbus called home,
and still the seafaring capital of Italy. We'll have a full day to enjoy
the city and nearby sites on optional shore excursions. Admire the port,
the Cathedral, art galleries, and stroll lanes lined with shops full
of surprises. Be back on board in time for your early evening sailing.
Day
10 - Monday: Naples - Disembark (Breakfast )
We'll
cruise down the coast of Italy through the night and the next morning.
By noon, we'll arrive once again in Naples. It's the end of our voyage,
but not of our journey. We'll transfer our luggage to a speedy ferry,
and make our way to Sorrento, across the bay. Here, Travel in Style's
representative will meet us and escort us to the four-star hotel that
will be our base for the next five nights. Once settled in, there's
time to wander the winding streets, and admire the pastel houses and
bay views that have made this a treasured destination for generations.
Day 11 - Sorrento - Positano - Amalfi (Breakfast )
Our buffet breakfast (included with our accommodations) will be available
from 7:30 a.m., then it's off by 8:15 for an exciting excursion to the
gems of the Amalfi coast. We'll stop to admire the panorama of Positano,
Ravello, and Amalfi, once a thriving city-state, and still a treasure
house of ancient buildings, including the Cathedral of St. Andrew. In
Ravello, we'll stop at the Villa Rufolo, where Richard Wagner was inspired
to create Parsifal. In the evening, after our return, you'll want to
stroll and appreciate the magic of Sorrento at twilight.
Day 12 - Wednesday: The Isle of Capri (Breakfast )
The fabled Isle of Capri in the Bay of Naples is our destination for
today. Our local representative will meet you after breakfast and escort
you to the harbor to board the jet boat. You'll spend the day on the
island with our guide, visiting the charming center of town, Parco Augusto,
the Faraglioni Rocks, and Anacapri, site of the Villa Michele and museum,
perched on an outcrop above the village and cerulean waters. It's a
foretaste of heaven. Wander and relax on your own in the afternoon,
before we meet up to take the 6 p.m. ferry back to Sorrento, and an
evening of strolling, shopping, and dining on our own.
Day 13- Thursday: Pompeii (Breakfast )
We depart by coach after our buffet breakfast for ancient Pompeii, buried
by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D., and frozen in time. We'll have
ample opportunity to explore the excavations, and appreciate the advances
and everyday life of this once-prosperous Roman city. We'll take in
splendid views of Vesuvius itself, the only active volcano on the mainland
of Europe, and enjoy the panorama of the Bay of Naples on the way back
to our lodgings in the evening.
Day
14 - Friday: Sorrento (Breakfast )
The day is entirely ours to enjoy. There's time for shopping, or perhaps
a return visit to Capri, or for further exploration of Ischia, Naples,
Hercolaneum, or Paestum on optional excursions. A day at the beach might
be the perfect way to cap your holiday.
Day 15 - Sorrento - Rome (Breakfast )
We'll have an early breakfast today - our coach departs for Rome at
6:45 a.m. By 9:30, we'll be at Rome's Tiburtina Station. If you're staying
on - and why not? - we'll be pleased to assist with additional hotel
nights. Otherwise, you can catch a direct train for the speedy trip
to Fiumicino Airport and your flight home. There are several departures
every hour.
